Class 2

Welcome to Class 2!

We are a mixed year group class (year 1 and year 2) of 25 children. Our teacher is Miss Digby and Mrs Oughton is our T.A. 

At Horsley Woodhouse, we believe that all children can become fluent readers and writers: this is why we use the Read Write Inc scheme to deliver our phonics. Last year we achieved 100% pass in the Year 1 phonics screening check. 

Our children begin their journey to become fluent readers in our EYFS class, where they start their phonics journey with individual sounds and blending. This is developed further in Class 2 with daily phonics sessions where children learn the remaining letter sounds that will enable them to read fluently and confidently. 

Reading is a gateway to the whole curriculum and the foundation of lifelong learning. Reading is a priority for us with children having time to read and share books with friends before register at the start of the day. The children love to choose books from our fantastic book corner.

Maths

Year 2 children will be recapping their number bonds knowledge and then applying this to their addition and subtraction work. They will also be working with numbers beyond 100 and developing their understanding of place value (what each digit is worth).

Year 1 will be developing their understanding of numbers to 10 and working on identifying one more/one less, counting on and counting back and identifying patterns. 

Useful Information

• The children must bring their reading books and reading diary to school every day. 
• We encourage parents to read with their child 3 times a week. This ALWAYS give children a huge boost to their progress. Children are also rewarded with certificates in assembly (Red for Read) if they read three times or more a week consistently at home. 
• PE is on Thursday the children can come to school wearing their PE kit. 
• The children are allowed to borrow one book per week from our wonderful school library. Our library swap days are Monday and Tuesday. 
• Hot House music is on a Monday afternoon. This year in a change to learning to play the Ukulele, Hot House - a team of specialist music teachers, will be delivering lessons on how to play the recorder. Recorders will be provided.  
• Children are encouraged to bring in a labelled water bottle into school. This can be kept in the classroom, so that your child can stay hydrated throughout the day.
